soft error, 2024, AR work using vinyl and Artivive, Vector Festival

Much of our work explores a strange fluidity between what is considered to be material and immaterial experience. soft error began when we learned that cosmic rays - ubiquitous yet invisible energy particles constantly bombarding earth - can flip computer bits, creating errors. Astronauts report being able to see them outside of earth’s magnetosphere. These “phosphenes” - optical blips experienced as light without light actually entering the eye - are also observed by people during various altered perceptual states (eg meditation, severe headaches, radiation therapy or sensorial deprivation). We discovered that the energy of cosmic rays do register briefly as colourful blips on the sensor of a closed-lens DSLR camera. This AR work animates our growing collection of over 1000+ unique cosmic ray events.
